Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell will direct and choreograph the Hollywood Bowl production of the musical Hairspray, August 5-7. Lon Hoyt will serve as musical director.

Based on the classic film by John Waters, Hairspray features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and launches a campaign to integrate the show.

Mitchell was the original choreographer of Hairspray on Broadway. He won a Tony Award for his choreography of the 2005 revival of La Cage Aux Folles, with his many other credits including serving as director and choreographer for the Broadway and West End productions of Legally Blonde. He is currently serving as choreographer on the new Broadway musical Catch Me If You Can.
