Man of La Mancha Rides Into the Marriott Theatre
Performances of the Tony Award-winning musical begin this evening.
Based on Miguel de Cervantes' famous novel, the show presents the poet Cervantes as he awaits trial by the Spanish Inquisition. As his defense, Cervantes presents the tales of Don Quixote and his squire Sancho, who embark on adventures across the country, and encounter the woman of Quixote's dreams, Aldonza.
The musical is directed by Nick Bowling with musical direction by Ryan T. Nelson, and it features lyrics by Joe Darion, score by Mitch Leigh, and book by Dale Wasserman. The cast is composed of Nathaniel Stampley as Don Quixote, Richard Ruiz as Sancho, Danni Smith as Aldonza, Jonathan Butler Duplessis as Scorpion/Pedro, Lillian Castillo as Graciosa/Antonia/Moorish Girl, Bobby Daye as Barber/El Medico/Moorish Pimp, James Harms as Padre/Judas Macabeo, Andrew Mueller as Anselmo, Matt Mueller as Duke/Carrasco/Knight of the Mirrors, Cassie Slater as Governor/Innkeeper, and Brandon Springman as The Gypsy/Jose.
"We want to present a version that audiences today can identify with," says Bowling. "This story underscores the importance of creating your own destiny through the power of imagination and, most importantly, through taking chances — a struggle we face every day. Quixote serves as a reminder to live life to the fullest and face your fears head-on."
The creative team includes Jeff Kmiec (set design), Nancy Missimi (costume design), Jesse Klug (lighting design), Bob Gilmartin (sound design), Sally Weiss (properties design), Patti Garwood (musical supervision and orchestra conduction).
Performances will run through August 14.
