Lea Salonga to Join Here Lies Love on Broadway for Five-Week Run This Summer
Tony winner Lea Salonga will costar in the Broadway production of Here Lies Love this summer for five weeks only at the Broadway Theatre, July 11-August 13.
Salonga, who also joins the producing team, will take on the role of Aurora Aquino, mother of activist Ninoy Aquino, played by Conrad Ricamora. Salonga will get to sing the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim power ballad "Just Ask the Flowers." It marks the first time that the Philippines-native will play a Filipino role on a Broadway stage.
After Salonga's five-week run ends, guest stars from the Philippines will take over the role, showcasing the country's abundant talent.
As previously announced, Jose Llana will once again play Ferdinand Marcos, with Ricamora as Ninoy. Both actors originated their roles in the Public Theatre production 10 years ago and received Lortel Award nominations. Ricamora also play the role at Seattle Rep. Complete casting is still to be announced.
Developed and directed by Alex Timbers, with choreography by Annie-B Parson and additional music by Tom Gandey and J Pardo, the show's home at the Broadway Theatre will be transformed into a dance club where the audience is immersed in the story. Once again, the production will have sets by David Korins, costumes by Clint Ramos, lighting by Justin Townsend, sound by M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer, and projections by Peter Nigrini.
Here Lies Love will begin previews on June 17 and is set to open on July 20. As casting for the show is still being finalized, the actor who will perform the role of Aurora Aquino regularly and in early previews has not yet been determined.
