Marcia ‘Marsh’ Gardner — who served as the Arlington, Virginia-based Signature Theatre’s Education Director — died on Friday, January 20.

Gardner appeared in the Signature’s first ever production, Mill Fire, and also performed in the theater’s productions of Angels in America and Poor Superman, the latter of which garnered her a Helen Hayes nomination.

Her behind the scenes work included initiating Signature’s play reading series, serving as literary manager, casting director, and eventually becoming the theater’s education director in 2006. Among her achievements in that position was starting new free arts programs for the community and founding Signature’s award-winning Signature in the Schools program.

She has also worked as actor, director and dramaturg at various theaters.

Donations can be made in her name to Signature Theatre for the Marcia Gardner Memorial Scholarship Fund for students in the Signature in the Schools program or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. (Click here to make a donation.)

A free and open to the public celebration of Gardner’s life will be held at Signature on February 13 at 7pm. No tickets are required.
