La Cage aux Folles begins performances tonight at Arlington, Virginia's Signature Theatre. Directed and choreographed by Signature associate artistic director Matthew Gardiner, the show will run through July 10 in Signature's MAX Theatre.

Bobby Smith and Brent Barrett (Chicago) will lead the cast as Albin and Georges. Smith and Barrett are joined by Jessica Lauren Ball as Anne Dindon, Michael Bunce as Francis, Sherri L. Edelen as Marie Dindon/Mme Renaud, Mitchell Hébert as Monsieur Dindon/Mr. Renaud, Nova Y. Payton as Jacqueline, DJ Petrosino as Jacob, and Paul Scanlan as Jean Michel. The Cagelles will feature Sam Brackley, Darius Delk, Ethan Kasnett, Isaiah W. Young, Phil Young, and Jay Westin.

With an iconic score by Jerry Herman, featuring "I Am What I Am" and "The Best of Times," and a book by Harvey Fierstein, La Cage aux Folles follows the 20-year relationship between Albin, the lead drag performer of the Saint-Tropez Night Club on the French Riviera, and Georges, the club's owner. Georges faces a test when their son announces his engagement to the daughter of ultra-conservative political parents.

The original 1983 Broadway production earned six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.
