Gala Hispanic Theatre Announces 2012-2013 Season

Washington D.C.’s Gala Hispanic Theatre has announced productions for its 37th season, 2012-2013, presented by founder and producing artistic director Hugo Medrano.

See a Count and Princess fall in love in the season opening of El Desden con el Desden/In Spite of Love by Agustin Moreto and directed by Hugo Medrano. The play will be in Spanish with English subtitles from September 13-17. Additional student matinees will run as well. La Casa de los Espiritus/The House of the Spirits, about post-colonial social and political upheavals in Chile, is by Caridad Svich and based on the novel by Isabel Allende. Directed by Jose Zayas, the show will run from February 7 to March 10 with additional student matinees. The show will be in Spanish with English subtitles. The season continues with bilingual musical DC-7: The Roberto Clemente Story written and directed by Luis Caballero. This production, about a man who battles both baseball and racial discrimination, will run from April 18 to May 26 with additional student matinees.

The Gala Hispanic Theatre also announces their ArteAmerica series beginning October 12-14 with Cine Mexicano, Primer Ciclo: La Pantalla Comica, a collection of landmark Mexican films. Amarillo, about a man who departs for the U.S.-Mexican border and mysteriously vanishes, will run from November 2-3 and is directed by Jorge A. Vargas. The series continues with honorary producers Joseph and Lynne Horning’s Fuego Flamenco VIII showcase from November 16 to December 2. The series concludes with Saulo Farcia, Entrada Gratis directed by Yoshvani Medina. This play, which pokes fun at the little white lies that make up society, will run December 7-8.

GALita–Theatre for Young Audiences also introduces three up-and-coming productions. Premiering October 15-27 at 10:30am and October 20-27 at 3pm, Platero Y Yo by Juan Roman Jimenez and directed by Cornelia Cody is about a young poet and his donkey. Fiesta de los Tres Reyes Magos/Three Kings Day is a celebration for the entire family that will occur on January 6 at 2pm. Finally, based on the novel by Miguel de Cervantes and adapted by Patricia Suarez, Las Aventuras de Don Quijote, about a Spanish gentleman who defends the helpless in search of glory and adventure, is directed by Hugo Medrano and will be live March 18-28 at 10:30am and March 23 and March 30 at 3pm.
