The national tour of South Pacific will open at the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco in September 2009. It replaces the pre-Broadway tryout of the new musical Ever After in SHN’s “Best of Broadway” schedule, with a press statement announcing that plans for the world premiere tuner have been “indefinitely postponed.”

As with the current Broadway revival at Lincoln Center, Bartlett Sher will direct the South Pacific tour. The musical is based on James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific, and features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, and a book by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan. The production features musical staging by Christopher Gattelli, set design by Michael Yeargan, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Donald Holder, sound by Scott Lehrer, and music direction by Ted Sperling. Additional details on the tour, including casting and further stops, will be announced at a later date.

The SHN season also includes a sitdown production of Wicked, and the national tours of Monty Python’s Spamalot, Grease, and August: Osage County.
