The Kimmel Center has announced its 2011-2012 season, which will include Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones’ Fela!. The show centers on musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s controversial life as artist, political activist, and revolutionary musician, and will run March 20-25.
Other highlights include one-night-only performances by Tony Award winners Audra McDonald (October 1) and Idina Menzel (November 3), as well as k.d. lang (September 29), David Sedaris (October 15), and Tony Bennett (November4).
In addition, the Kimmel will present such theater-based entertainments as the urban acrobatic performance TRACES (September 15-18), the percussion-dance piece Drumline Live (October 25-26), and Gazillion Bubble Show (November 5-6), as well as Max Raabe & the Palast Orchester, which will recreate Berlin cabaret hits from the 1920s and early 1930s (March 2).
Other offerings in the Kimmel’s season will be a holiday performance by Mannheim Steamroller (December 3), Curtis Opera Theatre’s production of Hans Wener Henze’s Elegy for Young Lovers (March 14-18), an appearance by Josha Bell with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (April 16), and composer Nico Muhly’s and librettist’s Stephen Karam’s previously announced opera Dark Sisters, which will have a single performance on June 8, 2012.
