For family fare, check out the unforgettable children's fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin (March 3-31), written and composed by Bay Area playwright Ron Lytle, at the East Bay Children's Theatre. This is a musical retelling of the beloved story of a miller's daughter who must spin straw into gold in order to impress the king and save her father from embarrassment. She enlists the help of an elf-like man who is able to achieve the impossible task, but the magical elf wants a very special gift.

Storybook Musical Theatre offers some valuable lessons about greed and false promises with their production of Rumpelstiltskin (through March 11). When a Miller brags to the King about his daughter's talent for spinning straw into gold, the young girl is called upon to demonstrate her skill. Unable to perform the task, she relies on Rumpelstiltskin to get her out of the jam. But before he'll do anything for her, Rumpelstiltskin requires the girl to make a promise to him - one she may not be able to keep.

Family highlights this month include Lee Meriwether's musical adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (Theatre West, March 31-July 14), and Santa Monica Playhouse's Sugoi! (Cool!), a Japanese-English one-act musical, featuring members of SMP's American Cultural Youth Ambassadors program. It plays at SMP on March 8 prior to its tour to Japan.
