The American Theatre Wing will sponsor an online essay contest in conjunction with the release of the organization’s original book, The American Theatre Wing presents The Play That Changed My Life: America’s Foremost Playwrights on the Plays that Influenced Them, available from Applause Theatre & Cinema Books on December 1.
Edited by Ben Hodges, the 200-page paperback volume will feature an introduction by Paula Vogel, and essays from distinguished American playwrights on the plays that transformed their lives. Contributors include Edward Albee, David Auburn, Jon Robin Baitz, Nilo Cruz, Christopher Durang, Horton Foote, Charles Fuller, A.R. Gurney, Beth Henley, Tina Howe, David Henry Hwang, David Ives, Donald Margulies, Lynn Nottage, Suzan-Lori Parks, John Patrick Shanley, Diana Son, Sarah Ruhl, Regina Taylor, and Doug Wright.
To participate in the contest — which runs November 2-29 — write an essay (limited to 350 words) about what show had the greatest impact upon you, when you saw it in the course of your life, and why it meant so much to you. Entries will be judged based on their creativity, clarity and passion for the theater. Prizes include an autographed copy of The Play That Changed My Life and other theatrical books from Applause Publishing.
