NYC's Film Forum to Show Bye Bye Birdie

By: Brian Scott Lipton · Jul 1, 2009  · New York

A restored print of George Sidney's 1963 film version of the Tony Award-winning musical Bye Bye Birdie will be shown at New York City's Film Forum, July 3-9. Composer Charles Strouse will be on hand to introduce the 7:45 showing on Monday, July 6.

The film focuses on what happens when hip-swingin' teen idol superstar Conrad Birdie gets drafted into the army and Birdie's manager Albert and his secretary and longtime girlfriend Rosie cook up a plan to send him off with and one last kiss from a lucky teenage fan on The Ed Sullivan Show.

In the film, Dick Van Dyke reprised his stage role as Albert; the cast also includes Janet Leigh, Ann-Margret, Maureen Stapleton, Paul Lynde, Bobby Rydell, and Jesse Pearson.

The Roundabout Theatre will revive the show this fall, starring John Stamos (Albert Peterson), Gina Gershon (Rose Alvarez), Bill Irwin (Mr. Harry MacAfee), Jayne Houdyshell (Mrs. Mae Peterson), Dee Hoty (Mrs. MacAfee), Matt Doyle (Hugo Peabody), Molly Ephraim (Ursula Merkle), Jake Evan Schwencke (Randolph MacAfee), Allie Trimm (Kim MacAfee) and Nolan Gerard Funk (Conrad Birdie).

City Center Encores! production of the classic George and Ira Gershwin is pleasingly zany, but lacks a little heart.
