The Scottsboro Boys to Open at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre on October 31

The Scottsboro Boys, featuring music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb and a book by David Thompson, will begin a Broadway run in the fall at the Lyceum Theater on October 7, with an official opening on October 31.

As previously announced, The Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis will present a production of the musical, July 31-September 25. Tony Award winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the production, as she did for its recent mounting at the Vineyard Theatre in New York.

No casting has been announced for the Guthrie production, although it is expected that much of the Vineyard cast will recreate their roles, with the notable exception of star Brandon Victor Dixon, who will play Ray Charles in the upcoming Broadway musical Unchain My Heart.

The piece explores the infamous “Scottsboro” case of the 1930’s when a group of African-American teenagers were unjustly accused of attacking two white women — and the boys’ attempts to prove their innocence.

The production will feature set design by Beowulf Borritt, costume design by Toni-Leslie James, lighting design by Kevin Adams, sound design by Peter Hylenski, orchestrations by Larry Hochman, musical arrangements by Glen Kelly, and music directionby David Loud.
