Stage veteran Woody Harrelson, along with Matthew McConaughey, will star in the television drama series True Detective, according to a report on Deadline.com. Cary Fukunaga will direct the series, written by Nic Pizzolatto.

The show will center on two detectives whose lives have intersected over a period of 17 years during the search for a serial killer in Louisiana. The project will tell the story, which unfolds from perspectives of both 1995 and 2012, in eight episodes.

Harrelson, perhaps best known from his Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Woody Boyd on the television series Cheers, starred in The Rainmaker and Biloxi Blues on Broadway. In the West End, he has appeared in On An Average Day and The Night of the Iguana. The actor has received Oscar nominations for his work in The Messenger and The People Vs. Larry Flynt.

Among his many other film credits are Game Change, No Country for Old Men, Zombieland, and Play It to the Bone, as well as Edtv and Surfer, Dude, in which he co-starred with McConaughey. Harrelson can currently be seen in the movie version of The Hunger Games.
