Meryl Streep has been named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, according to a report in The New York Times. She will be inducted in a ceremony to be held next month at the academy’s beaux arts complex in upper Manhattan.
Streep has won Oscars for Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice. Among her other films are the recent Julie and Julia, and It’s Complicated, as well as Doubt, Mamma Mia!, The Devil Wears Prada, Postcards From the Edge, Out of Africa, and The Bridges of Madison County.
Streep’s stage credits include Trelawny of the Wells, Secret Service, The Cherry Orchard, Happy End, The Seagull, and Mother Courage and Her Children.In addition, she won the Emmy Award for HBO’s film version of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America.
Conductor James Levine has been elected to a special category, established in 1983, for “Americans of great distinction in the arts whose work falls outside the traditional departments” of music (composition), literature and art. Architects Fumihiko Maki of Japan and Alvaro Siza of Portugal were added to the academy’s honorary category for foreign artists.
The inductees into the academy’s body also include authors Marilynne Robinson, Francine Prose, Thomas McGuane and Richard Powers, composers Tania Leon and Fred Lerdahl, architect Thom Mayne, and painters Thomas Nozknowski and Peter Saul.
