The winners of the 2010 Green Room Awards, which honor excellence in culture in Melbourne, Australia, have been announced.
In musical theater categories, Mary Poppins has been named Best Production. In addition, the show has garnered awards for Richard Eyre and Matthew Bourne for direction, Bob Crowley for scenic and costume design, Bourne and Stephen Mear for choreography, as well as performers Verity Hunt-Ballard and Philip Quast. The show’s ensemble also received an award for best featured ensemble or full ensemble performance.
Other Green Room Awards for musicals have gone to Geoffrey Rush, for his performance in The Drowsy Chaperone, and Esther Hannaford for her work in Hairspray.
In non-musical categories, where awards are divided into Theatre – Alternative & Hybrid Performance; Independent and Companies groupings, winners include Alison Whyte and Ewen Leslie who have won for their performances in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Richard III, which also has garnered an award for director Simon Phillips. Thyestes, co-produced by Malthouse Theatre and The Hayloft Project has been named Best Production and Best Ensemble in the “Companies” grouping.
In Cabaret categories, Yana Alana and tha Paranas in Concert has been recognized with five awards, including Best Production as well as one for headliner Alana.
Green Room Awards have also been announced in opera and dance categories.
