Julie Taymor will receive New Dramatists’ Lifetime Achievement Award at the organization’s 61st Annual Spring Luncheon tribute, to be held at the New York Marriott Marquis on Tuesday, May 18 beginning at 11:15am. The award will be presented to her by
Peter Gelb, the general manager of the Metropolitan Opera.
There will be performances by Reeve Carney and cast members of the forthcoming Broadway musical Spider Man: Turn Off the Dark, to be directed by Taymor, and by cast members of The Lion King, for which Taymor won the Tony Award.
Tributes to Taymor will be presented by Glen Berger, author of the book for Spider Man: Turn Off the Dark; Elliot Goldenthal, Academy Award-winning composer and Taymor’s longtime collaborator and companion; and Thomas Schumacher, president and producer of Disney Theatrical Productions.
In addition, there will be clips of Taymor’s work, including her soon-to-be-released film adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, starring Dame Helen Mirren.
Taymor’s other directorial credits include The Green Bird, Juan Darien, and Grendel. Her film credits include Titus and Across the Universe.
