Casting has been announced for Arthur Yorinks’ radio play version of Zora Neale Hurston’s novel Their Eyes Were Watching God at WNYC and WQXR Radio’s Greene Space February 29 – March 1. Ruben Santiago-Hudson will direct the performances, which will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the book’s publication.

The story focuses on Janie Crawford – free-spirited and in search of life and her authentic self – as she undertakes an unexpected journey that includes marriages to three different men, challenging the morals and social expectations of the small Southern town that she calls home.

The company will feature Roslyn Ruff as Janie Crawford, along with Leslie Uggams as her grandmother Nanny, Brandon Dirden as her lover and husband Tea Cake, and Chuck Cooper as Joe Starks. In addition, Phylicia Rashad will narrate the piece.

The creative team will include sound designer Ricardo Fernandez and lighting designer Jeannette Yew, as well as Bill Sims, Jr., who will provide original music.

The performances will be taped for broadcast in September.
