The Globe Brings The Merchant of Venice to the US for Three-City Tour

The London production stars Tony winner Jonathan Pryce.

Shakespeare's Globe will head to the U.S. this summer and fall with a three-city limited engagement of The Merchant of Venice.

Directed by Jonathan Munby, the production play limited engagements in New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago in July and August, featuring two-time Olivier and Tony Award winner Jonathan Pryce in the role of Shylock.

The show's first stop will be from July 20-24 at the Rose Theatre at Jazz at Lincoln Center, followed by a July 27-30 stint at the Eisenhower Theatre at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The London production will conclude its U.S. tour at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, running from August 4-14, prior to embarking on a tour of China, and a return engagement at Shakespeare’s Globe from October 4-15.

The Merchant of Venice features Stefan Adegbola as Launcelot Gobbo, Andy Apollo as Lorenzo, Raj Bajaj as Solanio, Jolyon Coy as Gratiano, Dan Fredenburgh as Bassanio, Michael Hadley as Duke of Venice/Tubal, Colin Haigh as Balthasar, Christopher Logan as Arragon, Dominic Mafham as Antonio, Brian Martin as Nerissa, Rachel Pickup as Portia, Jonathan Pryce as Shylock, Phoebe Pryce as Jessica, with John Hastings and Meghan Tyler in the ensemble. The production features live musicians, including Jeremy Avis (musical director/singer/percussion), Dai Pritchard (Bass Clarinet/Clarinet), Harry Napier (Cello/Voice), and Lea Cornthwaite (Singer/Percussion).

The production is designed by Mike Britton, with musical compositions by Jules Maxwell, choreography by Lucy Hind, fight direction by Kate Waters, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick, and sound design by Christopher Shutt.

The Globe on Screen series also returns to the U.S. with screenings of Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice, and Richard II, which will be shown in movie theaters from August through October in over 30 cities around the country.

The Globe additionally partners with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Shakespeare at the Bowl on Tuesday, August 30 at 8pm and Thursday, September 1 at 8pm at the Hollywood Bowl. Adapted by Bill Barclay and directed by Iqbal Khan, the evening will feature scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, performed by actors from Shakespeare’s Globe, and music inspired by the plays. Bramwell Tovey conducts.
