Roller derby fans can no longer consider themselves underrepresented in the world of theater!

Off-Broadway’s Atlantic Theater Company will present Rolin Jones’ The Jammer, a new play set in the world of competitive 1950’s professional roller derby, at Atlantic Stage 2, January 9 – February 10, with an official opening set for January 22. Jackson Gay, who previously collaborated with Jones and the Atlantic on the Pulitzer Prize-nominated The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow, directs the work.

Patch Darragh (The Glass Menagerie) leads the company as Jack Lovington, a Brooklynite on the quest for an identity who potentially finds one when he stumbles upon the Brooklyn Brown Devils roller derby team. The Jammer was first presented as part of the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival, and played the Edinburgh Fringe Festival later that year, where it received a Fringe First Award for Writing. Jones has written for the television series’ Weeds, Boardwalk Empire, and Friday Night Lights, for which he received a 2010 Emmy Award nomination. He is currently penning the screenplay for the film adaptation of Green Day’s American Idiot.

Also featured in the cast are Dan Domingues (The Cherry Orchard), Christopher Jackson (In the Heights), Billy Eugene Jones (The Mountaintop), Keira Naughton (The Rivals), Kate Rigg (The Dogeaters), Jeanine Serralles (The Maids), Greg Stuhr (Offices), and Todd Weeks (Bluebird).

The creative team for The Jammer includes Wilson Chin (scenic design), Jessica Ford (costume design), Paul Whitaker (lighting design), and Broken Chord (original music and sound design). Gay’s many directing credits include Scarcity, 3C, and A Little Journey.
