Michael Cerveris, Neil Patrick Harris, Denis O'Hare and 2004 Broadway Assassins Cast Reunites for Exclusive Concert

Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of the Stephen Sondheim/John Weidman musical received a one-night-only reunion.

By New York City

Roundabout Theatre Company reunited cast members from its acclaimed, 2004 Tony Award-winning revival of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Assassins on Monday, December 3 for a one-night-only benefit reading of the musical at Studio 54. Joe Mantello, who received a Tony Award for his direction of the production, helmed the script-in-hand concert, which was conducted by Paul Gemignani.

Despite critical acclaim and winning five Tonys in 2004, the cult-classic musical, which had been extended through the fall of that year, closed after only 101 performances. The reunion concert, therefore, was a gift to diehard fans, and theatergoers who were bummed they never got the chance to see the original production.

All but three of the 2004 production's original cast members were on hand to perform the darkly comedic musical, which explores the motivations behind the various attempts to assassinate American Presidents.

The principal company of the concert included Becky Ann Baker (Sara Jane Moore), James Barbour (Leon Czolgosz), Mario Cantone (Samuel Byck), Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris (John Wilkes Booth), Alexander Gemignani (John Hinckley), Neil Patrick Harris (Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald), Marc Kudisch (Proprietor), Jeffrey Kuhn (Giuseppe Zangara), Denis O'Hare (Charles Guiteau), and Annaleigh Ashford (who performed the role of Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, played in 2004 by Mary Catherine Garrison).

Original ensemble members Merwin Foard, Eamon Foley, Ken Krugman, Anne L. Nathan, Chris Peluso, Brandon Wardell, and Sally Wilfert also took part in the concert, with newcomer Mitchell Sink joining them. (James Clow and Kendra Kassebaum, featured in the 2004 ensemble, were unable to attend.)
