Manhattan Theatre Club and playwright Terrence McNally celebrated the off-Broadway opening of McNally's new play Golden Age on Tuesday, December 4. Following the performance at New York City Center - Stage 1, the cast and VIP guests strolled a few short blocks to Beacon Restaurant and Bar for swanky post-show festivities.
Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie (Chicago) helms the drama, which is set in 1835 on the opening night of I Puritani, the latest opera by Vincenzo Bellini (played by Emmy Award nominee Lee Pace). In this play-within-a-play, it's a make or break evening for Bellini, who is out to impress not only his audience but his rivals in the opera world.
Joining Pace in the cast are Dierdre Friel (Leap of Faith) as soprano Giulisa Grisi, Eddie Kaye Thomas (The Submission) as tenor Giovanni Battista Rubini, Ethan Phillips (November) as bass Luigi Lablache, Lorenzo Pisoni (Humor Abuse) as baritone Antonio Tamburini, Will Rogers (From Up Here) as music historian Francesco Florimo, child actor Coco Monroe as Page, two-time Tony Award-winner Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago) as mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran, and Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus) as composer Gioachino Rossini.
Guests at the opening night performance included contemporary opera singer Joyce DiDonato, five-time Emmy Award winner Doris Roberts (McNally's Bad Habits) six-time Emmy Award and Tony winner Tyne Daly (McNally's Master Class), Eddie Kaye Thomas' American Pie co-star Jason Biggs with his wife, Jenny Mollen, and Picnic star Maggie Grace.
The creative team for Golden Age includes Santo Loquasto (scenic design), Jane Greenwood (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), Ryan Rumery (sound design), and Tom Watson (hair & wig design).
