With the predictably predictable Tony Awards over and gone, we now can look forward to seeing more non-Broadway talent in the spotlight: Not as well known but a great deal more varied, the Eighth Annual OOBR Awards ceremony will take place on June 24, recognizing achievement in Off-Off Broadway theater this past season.

The awards are given by the Off-Off Broadway Review (OOBR), a publication that reviews hundreds of shows playing the fringes of New York every year. Only members of OOBR are eligible to be reviewed and, of those 238 plays, musicals, and performance pieces reviewed by the publication’s staff this season, 19 have been selected as winners–some for the entire production, others for outstanding elements such as acting, direction, or lighting. Among the honored shows are classics by the likes of Shakespeare and Strindberg, obscure plays, and new works such as Clint Jeffries’ musical Tango Masculino.

The Eighth Annual OOBR Awards will be held at the Union Square Theatre (100 East 17th Street, between Park Avenue South and Irving Place) on June 24 at 7pm. Tickets to attend the ceremony, which will feature live performances by some of the honorees, are $20. Reservations can be made by phoning 212-691-2014.
