August: Osage County and Passing Strange Win New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award

Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County has won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play of the 2007-2008 season, while the Best Musical award was given to Passing Strange. No award was given for Best Foreign Play. The award for best play carries with it a cash prize of $2,500.

The awards will be presented at a cocktail reception to be held on Monday, May 19 at the Algonquin Hotel. Presenters will include Edward Albee and Marian Seldes.

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle comprises 22 drama critics from daily newspapers, magazines, and wire services based in the New York metropolitan area. Adam Feldman, theatre critic for Time Out New York, is the organization’s president. The other members are Hilton Als, Clive Barnes, Melissa Rose Bernardo, David Cote, Joe Dziemianowicz, Michael Feingold, Robert Feldberg, Elysa Gardner, John Heilpern, Michael Kuchwara, Jacques le Sourd, Jeremy McCarter, David Rooney, Frank Scheck, David Sheward, John Simon, Michael Sommers, Terry Teachout, Linda Winer, and Richard Zoglin.
