The Royal National Theatre of Great Britain's production of Michael Frayn's Democracy, directed by Tony winner Michael Blakemore, will transfer to Broadway this fall. The show will begin previews at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on November 2 and will open there on November 18.

A tale of espionage, loyalty, and betrayal set in West Germany in the 1960s, Democracy charts the career of Willy Brandt and his devoted personal assistant Günter Guillaume, who also spied on Brandt for East Germany's Ministry of State Security. The RNT production of the play opened last August at the National's Cottesloe Theatre and won three awards for Best Play: the 2003 Evening Standard Award, the 2003 Critics' Circle Award, and the 2003 South Bank Award. A German-language production opened in Berlin last week.

Democracy reunites Frayn and Blakemore for the first time since their 2000 Broadway hit Copenhagen. The production's design team consists of Peter J. Davison (sets), Sue Wilmington (costumes), Mark Henderson (lighting), and Neil Alexander (sound). Casting for the Broadway production will be announced soon.
