Working Theater to Present James McManus' Cherry Smoke

New York's Working Theatre will present James McManus' Cherry Smoke from April 22-May 18 at Urban Stages. Tamilla Woodard will direct the play, which features Molly Carden, Patrick Carroll, Julie Jesneck, and Vayu O'Donnell.
Cherry Smoke is a love story that relates the irrational hopes of four destitute young people struggling to attain the American dream. The story follows Fish, a back-alley fighter who has been in and out of jail his entire life, and Cherry, a runaway who has been on her own since age 10 and hopes for a simpler life where she and Fish can be together. The production continues Working Theater's exploration of poverty in America.
"[McManus] writes about characters with hard lives and hard luck, and he writes about them with profound love," said Todd London, artistic director of New Dramatists. "His dialogue is painful and gorgeous…It's fitting and encouraging that the Working Theater is producing this beautiful play in New York City."
