David Henry Hwang, Sam Shepard to World Premiere Works in Signature Theatre’s 2012-2013 Season

Signature Theatre has announced the eight productions for its 2012-2013 season, to be presented in its brand new Frank Gehry-designed permanent home, The Pershing Square Signature Center.
As previously reported, Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang is the season’s Residency One playwright, which continues the core one-year Playwright-in-Residence program that produces a series of plays from the body of work of one accomplished writer.
Signature will present the world premiere of Hwang’s Kung Fu in Fall 2013, to be directed by Leigh Silverman. The play incorporates dance and music as it tells the story of a young martial artist who comes to America from Hong Kong in the 1960’s, with a dream as audacious as his talent: to become the biggest movie star in the world.
In addition, Signature will present revivals of Hwang’s Golden Child (October 23-December 2), directed by Silverman, and The Dance and the Railroad (February 5-March 17), directed by May Adrales.
Signature’s Legacy Program will include the world premiere of Sam Shepard‘s Heartless (August 7-September 16), directed by Daniel Aukin. The play centers on Sally, who lives with her mysterious family in a cavernous home overlooking Los Angeles. When a visitor arrives, Sally’s dark secrets– and the secrets of those around her– threaten to come into the light.
Bill Irwin will reunite with fellow clown David Shiner for the world premiere of The Bill Irwin and David Shiner Project (October 30-December 9). The Legacy program will also feature revivals of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson (January 29-March 10), directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Lanford Wilson’s The Mound Builders (April 23-June 2, directed by Jo Bonney.
The Signature’s Residency Five program will feature the world premiere of Regina Taylor’s —- and Potatoes (April 30-June 9, 2013). The piece centers on a Chicago book publisher who must face the real-life challenge of how to adapt his business in the rapidly changing digital age.
