Oscar nominee Danny Aiello will star in the world premiere of Susan Charlotte’s The Shoemaker, to be presented Off-Broadway by Cause Celebrè at Theater Row’s Acorn Theater, July 14-August 14, with an opening on July 24. Antony Marsellis will direct.

Set in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, the drama focuses on a shoemaker, an Italian Jew, on a devastating day that has become a turning point in American history. As each hour passes he confronts yet another part of his past, present and an uncertain future.

This stage drama was made into a film called A Broken Sole, starring Aiello, along with Margaret Colin, Bob Dishy, Judith Light, Laila Robins and John Shea. An earlier one-act version of the play was presented in New York in 2010, also starring Aiello.

Aiello was Oscar-nominated for Do the Right Thing, with his numerous film credits also including The Godfather, Part II, Fort Apache, the Bronx, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Moonstruck. Broadway credits include Gemini, Lamppost Reunion, The House of Blue Leaves, and Hurlyburly.

Each performance of The Shoemaker will be followed with a Q & A with Aiello. There will also be a special Cause Celebrè opening night benefit on July 24 at 7pm, entitled “Survivors and Surviving,” which will honor Sandy Aiello, Andrew Brozman, Michael Reinert, Nick Springer, and Seymour R. Weissberg.
