Avenue Q, Peter and the Starcatcher, Sleep No More, et al. Among Off Broadway Alliance Award Nominees

The nominations for the first annual Off Broadway Alliance Awards have been announced. The winners of the prizes, which honor both commercial and not-for-profit productions, will be announced on April 28.

Among the nominees are Dietrich and Chevalier: The Musical, NEWSical the Musical: Full Spin Ahead, The Burnt Part Boys, The Kid, and Tomorrow Morning, which have been nominated for Best New Musical. The Best New Play nominees are Devil Boys from Beyond, Freud’s Last Session, Peter and the Starcatcher, The Divine Sister, and The Whipping Man.

In the Best Theatrical Experience category, the nominees are Colin Quinn Long Story Short, Gatz, Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating, and Marriage, Play Dead, and Sleep No More.

Productions nominated for Best Musical Revival are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Dear Edwina, Hello Again, Imaginocean, and Nunsense. The revivals of plays that have been nominated are Angels in America, Marie and Bruce, and My Big Gay Italian Wedding, as well as the Public Theater’s The Merchant of Venice and Classic Stage Company’s The Three Sisters.

While these awards will be determined by members of the awards committee of the Off Broadway Alliance, a sixth award, Best Long-Running Show, will be chosen by audience vote. The nominees in this category are Avenue Q, Black Angels Over Tuskegee, Blue Man Group, Celebrity Autobiography, Danny and Sylvia: The Danny Kaye Musical, Fuerza Bruta, Love, Loss and What I Wore, Naked Boys Singing!, Perfect Crime, Stomp, The Awesome 80s Prom, The Fantasticks, and The Gazillion Bubble Show. In addition to the competitive awards, six Legend of Off Broadway Awards are being presented for sustained achievement to Blue Man Group, Charles Busch, Julie Halston, Tom Jones, Everett Quinton and Harvey Schmidt, and 2011 Hall of Fame Awards have been presented posthumously to Romulus Linney, Ellen Stewart and Lanford Wilson.
