On Friday, March 30, Michael McKean, Lynne Meadow, Cynthia Nixon, Hunter Parrish, and Blair Underwood took part in a panel discussion, "It's a Hard Act to Follow," which was sponsored by The Drama Desk at Sardi's Restaurant. The panel was moderated by USA Today's Elysa Gardner.
The discussion focused on such topics as the challenges of playing iconic roles, the differences between creating a new role and playing an established part, and memorable performances by the panelists as well as ones they've witnessed.
McKean is currently playing Dick Jensen in Gore Vidal's The Best Man at Broadway's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre; Nixon recently played Vivian Bearing in the Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Margaret Edson Wit, which was directed by Meadow; Parrish is currently playing Jesus in Godspell at Broadway's Circle in the Square; and Underwood will play Stanley in the upcoming Broadway revival of A Streetcar Named Desire, which begins previews on April 3 at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre.
The Drama Desk was founded in 1949, and is the only critics organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition among Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions in the same categories.
