Bay Area Critics Circle Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 2006 San Francisco Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Awards have been announced. The group, consisting of 21 critics, handed out a total of 56 awards — 31 in the drama categories and 25 in the musical categories.

Salome> (Aurora Theatre) and The Miser (Berkeley Repertory) were named Best Dramatic Production.Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Broadway by the Bay), Urinetown (Foothll Musical Theatre), and Vanities (TheatreWorks) were named Outstanding Musical Production. In addition, David Kirshenbaum took home the Best Score award for Vanities.

The award for Best Touring Production was shared by Doubt, Hairspray, and Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake. Carey Perloff, artistic director of American Conservatory Theatre, won the Best Script award for Luminescence Dating. A.C.T’s The Rivals and Happy End won numerous awards in the design categories.

Among the notable acting winners were Tim Miller (101 Beds), Rita Moreno (The Glass Menagerie), and Jessica Raum (Annie Get Your Gun), as well as the ensemble of Passing Strange, The Immigrant, and The Marriage of Figaro.
