Ed Asner, Richard Easton, et al. Set for LATW’s New Jerusalem

Ed Asner has replaced the previously announced Hector Elizondo in L.A. Theatre Works presentation of David Ives’ New Jerusalem, The Interrogation of Baruch de Spinoza at Talmud Torah Congregation: Amsterdam, July 27, 1656, at the Skirball Cultural Center, July 13-15. Rosaline Ayres will direct.

Asner has recently been seen on stage touring the solo show FDR. The actor is the recipient of seven Emmy Awards, and received another 16 Emmy nominations, as well as five Golden Globe Awards. His New York City theater credits include Ivanov, The Tempest, Face of a Hero, King Henry V, and Born Yesterday. He is perhaps best known for his work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Focusing on the 1656 interrogation of noted philosopher Baruch De Spinoza by the Jewish community of Amsterdam for his controversial ideas, New Jerusalem examines the clash between religion and modernity that Jews, Christians and Muslims are still struggling to reconcile some 350 years later. The company will also feature, as previously announced, Andrea Gabriel, Arye Gross and Amy Pietz, along with Richard Easton, reprising the role he created in the Off-Broadway production, as well as Matthew Wolf.

All performances will be recorded to air on L.A. Theatre Works’ syndicated radio theater series, which broadcasts weekly on public radio stations nationwide and can be streamed on demand at www.latw.org.
