Illusion Theater's presentation of Only One Sophie starts this evening.

Inspired by director Michael Robins’ remarkable family history, the show follows one boy as he grapples with his place in the world. Through colorful stories and songs, he uses memories of his beloved grandmother to guide him through his personal journey. Infused in his individual story are truisms and traditions of Jewish immigrants and the ways in which they connect and conflict with modern American upbringing. Spanning both history and continents, the show asks if it’s possible to imagine a future while being haunted by the past.

In addition to being directed by Robins, the show features book and lyrics by him and original music by composer Roberta Carlson. The cast includes Bonni Allen as Linda, Elizabeth Hawkinson as Young Sophie and Pam, Jay Hornbacher as Sam, Beth Gilleland as Clara, Bradley Greenwald as Michael, Kersten Rodau as Sophie, Randy Schmeling as Oscar, Benjamin Wagner as Louis, Richard, and Jacob. They are accompanied by Robert Carlson on the piano, Joe Englund on the cello, and Doug Haining playing the clarinet.

The creative team includes Dean Holzman (set design), Michael Wangen (lighting design), Kate Guentzel (choreography), Rabbi Simeon Glaser (consultant on Jewish history and heritage), and Dr. Markle Karlen (Yiddish consultant).

Performances will run through March 5.
