Morrison's story is set in Harlem where Jazz was being invented and re-invented as African Americans were migrating up away from the injustices of the South. Things are looking up until a middle-aged waiter shoots his teenage lover and his wife attacks the corpse at her funeral in this passionate story of love and obsession.
