José Rivera to Write Screenplay for Movie About Chilean Mine Disaster

Obie Award winner José Rivera will write the screenplay for a movie about the 33 Chilean miners who survived 69 days underground after the collapse of the San Jose mine in which they were working.

Rivera’s plays include School of the Americas, References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, Sueno, and Cloud Tectonics, as well as his Obie Award-winning Marisol. His play Lessons For An Unaccustomed Bride will also be featured, as previously announced, in Summer Shorts 5.


His film credits include The Motorcycle Diaries, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay, as well as Letters to Juliet, and Trade. In addition, he has written for such television series as Goosebumps, Eerie, Indiana, and Different Strokes.
