Ty Burrell will voice Mr. Peabody in DreamWorks Animation’s Mr. Peabody and Sherman, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter. Rob Minkoff will direct the project.

The film will be based on the cartoon characters created by Jay Ward. Mr. Peabody is a dog with genius-level intellect who travels in a time machine to witness historical events. He is accompanied by Sherman (to be voiced by Max Sherman), a young boy. The film will focus on what happens when the two discover that someone has stolen the time traveling machine, changing moments in history.

Burrell appeared opposite Kelsey Grammer in Macbeth on Broadway. His other stage credits include Burn This, Richard III, and Show People.

He can currently be seen as Phil Dunphy on ABC’s Modern Family, for which he received the Emmy Award. Among his many film credits are Leaves of Grass, The Incredible Hulk, and In Good Company.
