Christopher Hampton will write the script for the movie version of Kurban Said’s book Ali and Nino, according to a report on Variety.
The story, which takes place in Azerbaijan, centers on the love affair between a Muslim man, who shares his parents’ passion for the desert, and a Christian woman raised in Georgia with more sophisticated, European ideals.
Hampton is best known for the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses, for which he received a Tony Award nomination, and he won an Oscar for his adaptation of the script for the movie Dangerous Liaisons. Among his many other stage works are translations of Yasmina Reza’s Art and God of Carnage, as well as The Philanthropist and Tales From Hollywood. He will be represented on Broadway this season as book writer for the musical Rebecca.
His other film credits include Atonement, The Secret Agent, Mary Reilly, Imagining Argentina, and A Dangerous Method.
