The marquees of Broadway theaters in New York City will be dimmed in his memory on Wednesday, August 8, at exactly 8pm for one minute.
Hamlisch won the Tony Award, Drama Desk and Pulitzer Prize for his music for A Chorus Line. He was also Tony and Drama Desk-nominated for his music for Sweet Smell of Success, and received additional Drama Desk nominations for The Goodbye Girl and They're Playing Our Song.
In addition, Hamlisch composed the score for the musical adaptation of The Nutty Professor, which is currently receiving its world premiere at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. He also served as principal pops conductor for several symphony orchestras across the country.
The composer has scored such movies as The Way We Were and The Sting. His numerous awards also include three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, and three Golden Globes.
He is survived by his wife, Terre.
