Dustin Hoffman, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, et al. Salute Mike Nichols at AFI Event

Tony Award winner and-Academy Award-winning director Mike Nichols received the American Film Institute’s annual Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday, June 10. The event, which was held in Los Angeles, was taped for broadcast on TVLand on June 26.

According to a report in the Associated Press, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Robin Williams, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, and Eric Idle were among the celebrities who paid tribute to Nichols. Other attendees included Tom Hanks, Warren Beatty, Shirley MacLaine, Harrison Ford, and Natalie Portman.

Nichols has won seven Tony Awards for directing Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple, Plaza Suite, Luv, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, The Real Thing, and Monty Python’s Spamalot, and one for producing Annie. His most recent Broadway credit was directing the revival of Clifford Odets’ The Country Girl.

Nichols’s film and television work includes The Graduate, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Carnal Knowledge, Angels in America, The Birdcage, Wit, and Charlie Wilson’s War.
