Harry Groener, Ed Harris, Gregory Itzin, Chris Pine, Leslie Uggams, et al. Receive Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award Nominations

The nominations for the 42nd annual Los Angeles Drama Critic Circle Awards have been announced, according to a report in Backstage. The prizes will be presented in a ceremony to be held at the Colony Theatre on March 14.

One of the most nominated shows is the Antaeus Company’s doubly cast production of King Lear, which has been nominated as Best Production and has earned nominations for two performers, Harry Groener nominated in the Lead Performance category, and Gregory Itzin, nominated in the Featured Performance category. In addition, Bart DeLorenzo has been nominated for his direction of the production.

Another multiply nominated production is The Twentieth Century Way, which has earned four nominations, including one for Production, one for writer Tom Jacobson and one for director Michael Michetti. The Fountain Theatre’s staging of The Ballad of Emmett Till has also received a quartet of nominations.

Among the nominated actors are Ed Harris (Wrecks), Chris Pine (The Lieutenant of Inishmore), and Leslie Uggams (Uptown Downtown). Other nominations have gone to John Arnone, Andy Blankenbuehler, Michael Hollinger, and Paul Tazewell.

In addition to the nominations for the competitive awards, the winners of several special awards have been announced. Del Shores’ Yellow has won the Ted Schmitt Award for outstanding world premiere script, which includes a $1,000 award from Samuel French, which also extends an offer to publish it. In addition, Simony Levy has won the Milton Katselas Award for special achievement in directing, and Matthew Walker has been awarded the Joel Hirschhorn Award for outstanding achievement in musical theater. Among the other pre-announced awards is one for Lin-Manuel Miranda, who has won Best Musical Score for In the Heights.
