Heather Headley will play Rachel Marron, the role originated by Whitney Houston, in the stage musical version of The Bodyguard, according to a report in Variety. Thea Sharrock will direct the show, which will be designed by Tim Hatley and is scheduled to begin previews at the West End’s Adelphi Theatre on November 6.

Headley won a Tony Award for her performance in Disney’s Aida and won a Grammy Award for her album Audience of One. In addition, she received Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for This Is Who I Am. Among her recent credits are touring with Andrea Bocelli.

Like the movie, the show, with a book by Alex Dinelaris, will chart the relationship between a pop singer and the former Secret Service agent who takes on the job of protecting her. Additional casting and creative team will be announced shortly.

The production will feature all of the film’s songs, as well as ten other Houston hits. The score includes “Queen of the Night,” “So Emotional,” “One Moment in Time,” “Saving All My Love,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “How Will I Know,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
