Matilda The Musical to Transfer to West End’s Cambridge Theatre

Matilda The Musical will transfer to the West End’s Cambridge Theatre, beginning performances on October 18. The show premiered last December at the company’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus will direct and Peter Darling will choreograph the show.

Based on Roald Dahl’s 1988 children’s novel, the show has a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. The central character is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her parents but impresses her schoolteacher and, over the course of her first term at school, teacher and pupil have a profound effect on each other’s lives

The company will feature Bertie Carvel (Miss Trunchbull), Paul Kaye (Mr Wormwood), Josie Walker (Mrs Wormwood) and Lauren Ward (Miss Honey), along with Marc Antolin, Verity Bentham, Michael Kent, Melanie La Barrie, Matthew Malthouse, Alastair Parker, Nick Searle, and Emily Shaw.

Further casting will be announced shortly, including the four young actresses who will play the role of Matilda and three teams of nine young performers who will play the roles of Bruce, Lavender, Amanda, Nigel, Eric and the other pupils at Crunchem Hall Primary School.

The creative team includes production designer Rob Howell lighting designer Hugh Vanstone, and sound designer Simon Baker, as well as Paul Kleve, who provides special effects and illusions.
