Sondheim is receiving the prize in recognition of his contribution to London theatre. Previous honorees have included Sir Alec Guinness, Dame Judi Dench, Sam Mendes and Sir Peter Hall.

Among Sondheim's many other honors are an Academy Award, numerous Tony Awards (including a special award for Lifetime Achievement), multiple Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize.
