Las Vegas Spotlight: May 2010
If you’re a member of “Team Coco,” then you won’t want to miss Conan O’Brien’s fittingly titled Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television tour this month, when he stops by Vegas’ Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms on May 1-2. The deposed Tonight Show host brings “a night of music, comedy, hugging, and the occasional awkward silence” with appearances by Conan’s beloved sidekick Andy Richter, his former Tonight Show band, as well as some possible surprise guests. This is the must-see event of May, for those of you who can’t wait until O’Brien returns to the airwaves in the fall.
After wowing the nation and becoming the inaugural winners of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, hip-hop troupe JabbaWockeeZ is bringing the house down at the MGM Grand Hollywood Theatre (May 7-26). Clad in masks and gloves, in order to get the audience to focus on the group, not the individuals, the crew mesmerizes the crowd with their movements and artistic imagery. The show, described by the group as “the audio-visual story of inspiration brought to life through the harmonization of sound and movement,” will make you see dance in an entirely different light.
The Force will definitely be with The Orleans Arena on May 29, when Star Wars: In Concert arrives for a mind-blowing spectacular event. With John Williams’ iconic music performed by a full orchestra conducted by Dirk Brossé, footage from all six Star Wars movies and Anthony “C-3PO” Daniels hosting, it will be a truly unforgettable evening.
At the MGM Grand Hollywood Theatre is Girls Night: The Musical (May 6-26). Spend the evening with these five friends, as they go on a wild karaoke night out. A critical favorite since its 2003 debut in the UK, the show has been described as Desperate Housewives meets Mamma Mia!”
Las Vegas Little Theatre’s Mainstage presents Neil Simon’s I Ought to Be in Pictures (May 7-23), directed by Paul Thornton. From the mind of the legendary playwright, this Tony Award-winning comedy-drama tells the story of Herb Tucker, a screenwriter with writer’s block, and the now-grown daughter he abandoned sixteen years earlier. LVLT’s Fischer Black Box presents the winner of its new works competition, Stanley Toledo’s Swisters, (May 14-23), directed by Courtney Sheets. Fed up with life on the poor side of town, Frankie finds out that she was switched at birth at the hospital. Jill, the woman living the life Frankie feels belongs to her, is now doing quite well, married to a successful accountant. So Frankie locks Jill in the closet and takes over her life — and enters a world of blackmail and deception.
Comedy is in full bloom this May in Las Vegas. Dave’s not here, but Cheech & Chong are, at The Mirage (May 21-22) in Get It Legal. Lily Tomlin continues her limited run of her Not Playing With a Full Deck show at the MGM Grand Hollywood Theatre (May 1-5).
Some TV favorites, old and new, perform in Sin City this month. The Late Late Show‘s Craig Ferguson is at The Venetian Showroom (May 21-22), Tom Papa, host of The Marriage Ref, will be performing at The Orleans Showroom (May 21-22) and Tim Conway & Friends, starring the former Carol Burnett Show funnyman, along with Chuck McCann and Louise DuArt, will be at The Las Vegas Hilton (May 14-15). And some perennial Vegas headliners are back in town for more laughs: Jerry Seinfeld at The Colosseum At Caesars Palace (May 1), Jay Leno at The Mirage (May 14-15), Lewis Black at The Mirage (May 29-30), and Chelsea Handler at The Colosseum At Caesars Palace (May 29).
Lots of music this May in Las Vegas. Carrie Underwood performs at The Orleans Arena on May 22. The reunited New Kids on the Block are hangin’ tough at the Pearl Concert Theater at The Palms on May 7-8. Joining forces for the United in Rock tour are Styx and Foreigner, with special guest Kansas, at Mandalay Bay Events Center on May 22. At Mandalay Beach are two 90s favorites, hip-hop group Cypress Hill (May 22) and alternative rock group Barenaked Ladies (May 29). The Orleans Showroom is spanning the decades this month, with The Four Tops (May 7-9), The Smothers Brothers (May 15-16) and Air Supply (May 28-30). And The M Resort has some all-time favorites — The Steve Miller Band (May 21) and Huey Lewis and the News (May 29).
