Twyla Tharp will create a new dance work for the Atlanta Ballet, according to published reports. The company will debut the piece in February 2012, and it will subsequently be presented by the Winnipeg Ballet in the fall of 2012.

The untitled dance will involve the entirety of the Atlanta Ballet company, including its professional dancers and its students, as well as children. It will focus on a little girl’s coming of age and be set primarily to the music of Schubert.

Tharp won Tony and Drama Desk Awards for her choreography of Movin’ Out, for which she was also nominated as a director. In addition, she received a Tony Award nomination for her choreography of Come Fly Away, which she also directed. Her other credits on Broadway include The Times They Are A Changin’, and Singin’ in the Rain.

The choreographer is also the recipient of two Emmy Awards, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the Astaire Award, and the Drama League Award for Sustained Achievement in Musical Theater, among other honors.
