The winners of the 2007 Evening Standard Theatre Awards, honoring the best of London theater, have been announced.

The Chichester Festival's Macbeth, now playing in the West End and due to arrive in New York in February, took home the Best Director trophy for Rupert Goold and Best Actor for star Patrick Stewart. In the Best Musical category, the winner was the recently opened production of the Broadway hit Hairspray.

A Disappearing Number, by Simon McBurney and his troupe, Complicite, was named Best Play; the National Theatre's adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's children's novel War Horse took home Best Design for Rae Smith and Adrian Kohler; and Royal Court playwright Polly Stenham's debut That Face won the Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright, which carries with it a check for £25,000.

Anne-Marie Duff was named Best Actress for the National Theatre's production of Saint Joan, and actor Stephen Wright received the Milton Shuman Award for Most Promising Newcomer for his work in Dealer's Choice (which transfers to the West End next month) and Don Juan in Soho.
