Michael Wilson will leave his position as artistic director of Hartford Stage in June 2011, according to a report in The New York Times. Wilson has served as the theater’s leader for twelve years.

Wilson’s tenure at Hartford Stage has included a Tennessee Williams Marathon that ran from 1998 to 2008, and featured the premieres of Williams’ three previously unpublished short plays. Most recently, he directed the company and Signature Theatre’s co-production of Horton Foote’s The Orphans’ Home Cycle, a piece commissioned by Hartford Stage.

In addition to this work, Wilson commissioned new plays from Christopher Shinn, Edward Albee, Luis Alfaro, Theresa Rebeck, and Craig Wright, among others. Hartford Stage also launched a $4 million renovation, the first phase of which is expected to completed in October, under Wilson’s leadership.

In the coming season, Wilson is scheduled to direct Michael Kramer’s Divine Rivalry at Hartford Stage, as well as a production of Tennessee Williams’ The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore for Roundabout Theatre Company.
