Nilo Cruz will provide the libretto for Jimmy Lopez’s opera Bel Canto, which will premiere as part of the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s 2015-2016 season. Stephen Wadsworth will direct the piece, which will be conducted by Andrew Davis.

The opera, based on Ann Patchett’s novel of the same name, has been inspired by a hostage crisis in Peru. The production will feature Danielle di Niese as Roxanne Coss.

Cruz won the Pulitzer Prize for Anna in the Tropics. Among his many other plays are The Color of Desire, Beauty of the Father, and A Bicycle Country. In addition, he has written a new set of songs, Farhad and the Secret of Being, with composer Jim Bauer, and he and Robert Moresco are writing the screenplay for the film Castro’s Daughter, which will star Antonio Banderas as Fidel Castro.
