Victory Gardens has announced selections for its 2011-2012 season, which will open with Sarah Ruhl’s Tony-nominated In the Next Room or the vibrator play (September 9-October 10), directed by Jessica Thebus. The play is set in the twilight of the Victorian age, as a buzzworthy new medical device is developed to calm women with “hysteria.”

As part of their subscription to the 2011-12 Season, Victory Gardens subscribers will attend the Tony Award-winning play Red by Victory Gardens Playwrights Ensemble Member John Logan at Goodman Theatre, directed by Robert Falls (September/October 2011). The work takes you into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, and his fraught relationship with a seemingly naïve young assistant.

In the new year, the theater will present Theresa Rebeck’s What We’re Up Against (January 27-February 26), a complicated modern battle of the sexes withing contemporary American corporate culture.

The season will also include We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South-West Africa, From the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915 (March 30-April 29), by Jackie Sibblies Drury, directed by Eric Ting. In the piece, a group of actors giving a presentation on a distant genocide realize that summaries based on history books aren’t nearly enough to capture the complexity of human extermination–or human interaction.

The final selection of the season, to run May 25-June 5, will be announced at a later date.
