Phantom of the Opera Stars Light the Empire State Building for 30th Anniversary

The stars of Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera kicked off the musical's 30th-anniversary festivities by lighting the Empire State Building on Wednesday, January 24.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will host a gala performance tonight at the Majestic Theatre, followed by a postshow party at the Rainbow Room. At 11pm, a custom-designed light show by Marc Brickman will illuminate the Empire State Building set to the music of Lloyd Webber's score.
Swedish recording artist Peter Jöback serves as Broadway's 30th-anniversary Phantom, alongside Ali Ewoldt as Christine, and Rodney Ingram as Raoul. Check out photos in the gallery below.
The 30th-anniversary company also includes Laird Mackintosh (Monsieur André), Craig Bennett (Monsieur Firmin), Maree Johnson (Madame Giry), Kara Klein (Meg Giry), Raquel Suarez Groen (Carlotta), Carlton Moe (Piangi), and Kaley Ann Voorhees, who plays Christine at certain performances.
Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his command. The musical opened January 26, 1988.
