May 10, 2010

A national and international tour of Fela! will launch in the fall of 2011. It is anticipated that the production will be seen in such U.S. cities as Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tempe, and Washington. International engagements are being explored for Amsterdam, Melbourne, Paris, Rotterdam, Sydney and Toronto.

The musical has been directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Bill T. Jones and features a book by Jim Lewis. The newly announced tour is in addition to the previously announced engagement that the production will play at London’s National Theatre this fall.

The show is about Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s controversial life as artist, political activist, and revolutionary musician. It features his rousing music performed live onstage by Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of Aaron Johnson. The production also features musical arrangements and additional music by Johnson and Jordan McLean.
